Your book is . . . But another friend was here

who’d brought a house gift for us, a crystal bowl,

a co-incidence, but our minds work that way,

and the world, as we have agreed, is a teaching machine.

It’s a lovely bowl, clean of line, clear,

and catching the light live. When he’d left the room,

I did what we all do, sooner or later,

deliberately or just by accident,

and flicked my fingernail against its rim.

It’s a good bowl, and the crystal rang and rang.

The sound of the glass was clear as its light and line.

And I have read your book, and flicked my nail

against its rim, and having done so, thank you,

for the air rings, sings with a clear tone.
